Self Care

Caring for the Soul and Mind
In the quiet challenges of daily life, we often pour ourselves out for others—our families, our parishes, our communities—yet forget to pause and care for the soul and body God has entrusted to us. Catholic self-care is not self-indulgence; it is stewardship. It is the gentle, humble act of tending to the person God lovingly created.

Even Jesus, in His ministry, stepped away to rest and pray.

“But He would withdraw to desolate places and pray.” Luke 5:16

Practical Self-Care: Faithful and Human
Self-care honors the reality that we are whole persons—body, mind, and spirit. Here are some suggestions to nurture yourself in a way that aligns with both faith and well-being:

Everyday Self-Care

  • Turn off your phone or notifications for a short time each day to rest your mind.
  • Drink water and eat nourishing meals with intention and gratitude.
  • Journal your thoughts and feelings to better understand your emotions
  • Spend time on a creative hobby: painting, music, baking, gardening—whatever brings quiet joy.
  • Get outside, even briefly. Fresh air and natural light can lift the spirit.

Spiritual Self-Care

Spend 10 minutes each morning in silent prayer or spiritual reading.
Take a quiet walk and pray the Rosary or simply speak to God in your heart.
Create a sacred space at home—a small table with a candle, crucifix, or holy image—for reflection.

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you.” Psalm 55:22

A Prayer for Peace of Heart

Lord Jesus,
You carried the weight of the cross and felt the pain of every human sorrow. Be near to me in my weariness.
Quiet my anxious thoughts, calm my restless spirit, and draw me to Your Sacred Heart.
Help me to remember that I am Yours and that I do not walk alone.
Strengthen me to care for myself with compassion, so I may better serve You and others.
Amen.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it is one more way to give self care.
